ELEVATOR PITCH ACOUSTICS

After the first 3 weeks we had our elevator pitch today and with a group of 60 this was quite an event.
It was the first time we got a lecture room with a projector, actually I did not missed the tent …

With 60 presentations in a row ( ok in groups of 4 ) you got the full load of creativity all around the topic of acoustics and it was a pleasure to follow each of them.

At the end of the session we asked to place all slides and the mock ups on a big table, this was an amazing moment realising how many students already build a model.

Most of the students were already able to form a group and pick a design to develop further, for the ones who did not found a suitable partner, we will also find someone for you !

The day ended perfectly with a beer on behalf of BOUT in the studio. We will place the slides of today also within the next days but have a look for the first impressions of the day.

VISITING AN ANECHOIC ROOM

As part of our acoustics topic we were able to visit the dead room of our university. Foteini Setaki was able to get the key to this amazing testing facility which is officially known as a Anechoic room or chamber. The room is designed to have no echo at all, which is quite an experience beeing in there.

Some say they have the feeling of a pressure on their ears, some feel dissy or different at all.
You are able to talk in this room, but your voice is very dampened and if you stop the sound immediately stops. Even yelling out loud is hard in there and the sound seems to stop even before you stopped yelling.

We experienced the room in small groups, tested it in the dark ( yes thats the black picture ) kept our mouth shut and screamed into the walls. This room is really different from everything you have ever experienced.

The most scary is when there is total silence you are able to hear the liquids in your body, hear joints between your bones and the grass growing in your ears ( which seems to be hairs according to Ulf …)
and your camera also sounds totally different.

If you ever have the chance to visit a dead room, do it !

Acousticsboost lecture

This semesters topic is acoustic amd we try to improve the acoustic comfort for an office. Honestly acoustic is quite nasty to work with, while sunshades could be easily tested by holding against the window or a lamp, for acoustic panels there is no quick test.

To get a good boost into the basics and the topic itself we invited two phd researcher from our faculty. Jochen Krimm is busy developing noise reducing facades for urban application while Foteini Setaki researches about the possibilities of using additive manufactoring to develop acoustic elements in an office environment.

The two lectures were very helpful and informative, but the topic is not that easy, luckily we are able to ask them again to help developing our concepts.

Thanks to our guest speakers !

Camp fire

As usual for the beginning of the semester we start with a camp fire to get to know each other.

We have quite a diverse group interested in a huge variety of activities from dance, music, sport, woodworking and travelling. Lets see how this will influence the students designs.
